Why doesn’t everyone drive a land barge? They’re dirt cheap.

Why doesn’t everyone drive a land barge?
Because people are idiots.

There’s a Buick Electra wagon (with wood paneling) for sale locally and I’m tempted.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 20:48 |

Totally would if they were as safe as modern cars

Just don’t hit things.

If offered the choice of any road couch, my first and rather odd choice would be a first-generation Buick Park Avenue with a velour interior. I think they are just so cool-looking. The only shame is, to have a supercharger, you had to have leather.

I wouldn’t but the girl with her Starbucks cup who is also texting and driving might hit me

Do it. The Electra drives so good. Really great driving cars.

Um...

$3,700 worth of cars, seen here consuming $4,000 worth of gas.
Also, isn’t it crazy that $3,700 CAD is now worth ~$2,800 USD?
![]() 03/20/2016 at 20:52 |

It has wire wheels and wood(!!!)
![]() 03/20/2016 at 20:54 |

because this is wonderful thing called: going farther then 4 meter on 10 liters of fuel .
![]() 03/20/2016 at 20:54 |

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I might die impaled on my porcelain steering wheel. It’s not as safe or as easy as a modern car and that’s why I like it. Life is just so good in an old car.

My Chrysler gets 12 mpg and the Buick gets 8.5

Smiles per gallon!

yea, i get a lot of that on the SV too.
but it doesnt cost me my last 4 paychecks to fill it up.

Because no B-pillar.

We really need to get our old cars together for some photos. Near some old buildings so they look like period shots!
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:01 |

Whatever! That’s why they had huge gas tanks!
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:01 |

I am 110% for this.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:02 |

Prices are actually increasing a lot for clean examples.
I wouldn’t mind a 74-76 Caprice.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:02 |

the problem is that I dont have the huge wallet for such an expensive consumable
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:03 |
|
But... gas is so CHEAP now, right?
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:03 |
|
gas can be as cheap or expensive as it wants when the fuel tank has a capacity to rival the titanic.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:04 |

Thankfully these are so commonly for sale that you can usually find one in whatever condition you want.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:04 |

It’s awesome when filling up your car actually affects the wholesale pricing in your area...

I had one of these for a while. It wasnt my DD but that thing was a tank! Loved it. Also the gas mileage was very good.

Very boring to drive and takes a gallon of gas just to start it up. Nothing really to like about that.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:31 |
|
That’s not... OK, yeah, that is pretty terrible, but, still, no car payment, cheap insurance, and a low purchase price means you saved plenty to pay for fuel.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:33 |
|
No worse than a first gen Dodge Durango.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:35 |

Boring? It’s like a mattress mounted on bowling balls with 300 horsepower. Just keeping it in the lane is an adventure. And fuel economy ain’t no thing.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:38 |
|
Wouldn’t you rather comfortably stay in your lane while slaying corners in a lightweight analog balanced sports car?
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:39 |
|
If you can find a clean classic lightweight sports car for the same $1,700 I paid for my Chrysler I’m all for it. I love sports cars too but they’re in a totally different price bracket.

Na Miata, spitfire, MGB, aw11 Mr2, FB rx7, pre 85 corolla, celica, 280z-zx, and even small fwd cars like the CRX is gonna be cheap and fun.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 21:54 |

I’d like to keep is to classic era stuff. Used to own a 280ZX and a hot hatch but these days I like to keep it to chrome bumpers and carbs. Most of the truly classic sports cars in Ontario start at around $4k. Not crazy money but finding a B or a Spit that hasn’t totally rusted out for $1,700 is a huge challenge. My next car will be a ‘69 Corvette. I suppose that’s halfway between barge and sports car. it certainly won’t cost $1,700!

I dont really know or care about amurican muscle but isn’t that a coveted classic?
![]() 03/20/2016 at 22:04 |
|
Yup. It’ll be my priciest car by a huge margin. You can find them in ratty condition for around $15-20k. I’m not saying its a budget sports car! Been on the hunt for a ~$1,500 pre-72 drop top for a while (124, MGB, Spit etc.) but no dice.

Why doesn’t everyone drive a Citroën Xantia?
(Picture: $-4 worth of 1990s Citroën)

Gas is cheap right now, who cares!

Not me!

Because for some of us, we live in communist states that have parking lots no bigger than a gnat’s pubic hair that make finding a spot for them impossible.
If I lived in a state with bigger parking spaces, I would drive a land barge everyday.
![]() 03/20/2016 at 22:48 |

Street parking in my neighbourhood is hard enough in a smaller modern car with a measurable turning radius. I can’t imagine the look my wife would give me if I told her the Passat was getting replaced by a land barge! Although, now that I think about it, the car would spend less time in the shop...

EXCELLENT picture Cletus, one of your best. I’ll be having the bargiest of land yachts once I have kids. That Buick is MONEY.
